Trip Itinerary

  • Day 1: Departure from USA.
  • Day 2: Arrival. Rest for a few hours. Visit Basilica of St. Paul outside the Wall where the body of St. Paul is buried. It is the 2nd largest basilica in Rome and the 5th in the world. Check in the hotel. In the afternoon, 0ur private bus will take us to the town where the Pope’s Summer Residence is located: the charming Castel Gandolfo with its spectacular Lake Albano. Awesome place just like those towns you see on TV. Wine Tasting and opening night dinner at 6:00 pm at a local upscale restaurant: eat where the Italians eat. Several courses of delicious Italian food. Red and white wine included. Casual dress. Overnight in Rome.
  • Day 3: Late Start. Visit the Colosseum in the morning. The Colosseum, the symbol of the city of Rome , is a great building that has been standing since 80 A.D. In the afternoon go to St. John Lateran, the first Basilica ever to be built in the Roman Empire and then visit the Catacombs. The Catacombs are breathtaking. 500,000 people were buried there.  Back at the Hotel around 5:30 pm. Rest for an hour. Dinner around the hotel area at 6:45 pm. Red and white wine included. Overnight in Rome.
  • Day 4: Start the day by visiting St. Mary Major, the main Basilica dedicated to Mary in Rome. We will see the remains of Jesus’ manger, the tomb of Bernini, the remains of St. Matthew the Evangelist, the tomb of St. Jerome, and the oldest icon in the world of the Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke: the famous Salus Populi Romani. We will visit the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel (the Pope's private Chapel) and St. Peter's in the Vatican, the largest Basilica in the world.  Long pants, capris, or skirts below the knee; shoulders covered. Dinner and overnight Rome.
  • Day 5: Private bus around 7:30 am to the Vatican to experience the 10:00 am Audience with the Pope. We will see the Pope very closely; sometimes we even shake his hand.  We will visit the Spanish Steps. This is the place where Romans hung out. Walk to Trevi Fountain for lunch and shopping. Walk to Pantheon, the oldest functional building in the world and then to the great artistic place of Piazza Navona around 4:30 pm. Dinner at Piazza Navona. Red and white wine included. Casual Dress throughout the day. Overnight in Rome.
  • Day 6: Check-in downtown Sorrento after visiting the incredible city of Pompeii. Dinner around the hotel area at 6:45 pm. Red and white wine included. Casual dress throughout the day. Overnight in Sorrento.
  • Day 7: The Island of Capri is the greatest place for many people. Optional: visit the extraordinary beautiful Blue Grotto with its shining bottom, tour the Island, shopping. Dinner around the hotel area at 6:45 pm. Red and white wine included. Casual Dress throughout the day. Overnight in Sorrento.
  • Day 8: Check-out Sorrento. Drive along the great Amalfi Coast and enjoy the scenery of the amazing houses and the beautiful beaches. Continue to drive to Calabria and visit Cosenza on the way to Reggio Calabria. Check-in the hotel in Reggio Calabria.
  • Day 9: Tour of Reggio Calabria. Visit the Abbazia di Serra San Bruno and the Byzantine Church of Stilo dating back to the 9th century. In the afternoon see the National Archeological Museum of Reggio Calabria to admire the bronze work of Riace. Dinner and overnight in Reggio Calabria.
  • Day 10: Leave to Messina by ferry and then take the bus to Catania in Sicily. Arrive in Catania and check-in hotel. Some sights to see while in Catania: Piazza Duomo ~ Elephant Fountain, The Cathedral with the Chapel of Sant’Agata containing the saint’s treasures. Walk the famous Via Crociferi where you can see some wonderful examples of 18th century Baroque buildings: Jesuits’ Church, Church of San Giuliani and the Benedictine Monastery. Walk on the Via Etnea, an elegant street lined with Baroque-style buildings and shops that crosses the city from Piazza Duomo to Piazza Stesicoro where you can see the Vincenzo Bellini Monument, the imposing Roman Amphitheater, and the Church of Sant’Agata alla Fornace. Dinner and overnight in Catania, Sicily.
  • Day 11: Visit the famous Mount Etna in the morning. In the afternoon proceed to Taormina. See Corso Umberto; the best Italian shopping stores on a car-free main walking street; the Byzantine Madonna - the "non hand-made" Madonna is now kept in the cathedral of Taormina; The Clock Tower - it is the first tower that was built on the ruins of an older defense wall which would have dated back to the origins of the city around 4th century BC. Overnight in Catania, Sicily.
  • Day 12: Drive to Syracuse. Visit the Duomo (Cathedral). The building contains influences from various cultures within its wall: Greek, Byzantine, Arabic, and the Norman Church of Santa Lucia. The church stands on the sight where, so the legend goes, Syracuse’s patron saint was martyred. Church of San Giovanni: The church was built in the 6th century and the main façade was completely rebuilt in Baroque Style after the 1693 earthquake. The catacombs are also located there. Tour of the archeological area and the famous Greek Theater. Overnight in Catania, Sicily.
  • Day 13: Private bus to Airport and departure from Catania back to USA.
