Trip Itinerary ~ 10 Days
Day 1: Departure from the USA.
Day 2: Upon your arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for check-in. Dinner and overnight in Tokyo.
Day 3: Visit the Meiji Shinto Shrine (the faith of the early persecuted Christians) in the heart of Tokyo, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken who westernized Japan in the 19th Century. Proceed to the Takanawa Catholic Church in the historic district, the Shibuya Crossing, the famous intersection known for its massive pedestrian traffic. Finish the day by going to the Imperial Palace of Japan: The Imperial Household of Japan is oldest organization in the world that still exists. Dinner and overnight in Tokyo.
Day 4: Travel to the famous Mount Fuji. Just as the Colosseum is the symbol of Rome, Mount Fuji is the symbol of Tokyo and the nation of Japan. Proceed to visit the beautiful village of Oshino Hakkai: here, enjoy a great view of Mount Fuji. Proceed to tour St. Mary Cathedral, the largest church in Japan known for its architectural beauty. Dinner and overnight in Tokyo.
Day 5: Travel to Osaka, which was briefly the capital of Japan in the 7th and 8th centuries. Visit Osaka Castle and St. Mary’s Cathedral. Dinner and overnight in Kyoto.
Day 6: Visit Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and walk through the Gorgeous bamboo forest. Proceed to Nijo-jo Castle with its beautiful gardens and “nightingale floors,” which chirp when walked upon. St Fracis Xavior is the first to proclaim the Gospel in Japan at the beginning of the 16th century: Visit St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, also known as the Kawaramachi Church. Afterward, we will experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a cultural highlight of Kyoto. Dinner and overnight in Kyoto.
Day 7: Travel to Hiroshima, the site of the atomic bomb impact during World War II. Visit the ruins of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, one of the only buildings left standing after the atomic bomb hit the city. Proceed to tour the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Finish the day by visiting the Assumption of Mary Cathedral, which was built by a priest who survived the atomic bomb explosion. Dinner and overnight in Hiroshima.
Day 8: Ride the Shinkansen to Nagasaki, the historical center of early Christianity in Japan. Nagasaki was hit by another atomic bomb. Visit the Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum (the Holy Martyrs who were killed on Nishizaka Hill for practicing their faith) and the Nakamichi Church. Dinner and overnight in Nagasaki.
Day 9: Visit St. Felippo de Jesus Church with its stunning architecture and named for one of the first Mexican Catholic martyrs. Then proceed to see the Oura Church, formally the Basilica of the Twenty-Six Holy Martyrs of Japan, which is said to be the oldest Christian Church in Japan. Continue to visit Urakami Cathedral, a significant Catholic church rebuilt after being destroyed in the atomic bombing. Then off to the Hongouchi Monastery, founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe. Finish the day by going up to Mt. Inasa to enjoy a final beautiful view of Japan. Dinner and overnight in Nagazaki.
Day 10: Fly back home.
