  • Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Departure from USA, overnight on the plane.

Day 2: Upon arrival in Lisbon, meet the Tour Guide at the airport. Tour of Lisbon including a visit to Jeronimos Monastery, which is one of the greatest monuments to the Age of Discovery with all its grandeur and Manueline style of architecture. Spend the remainder of the day at the Baixa, Lisbon’s downtown area. It is still the traditional center of city life, and is where Lisbon’s oldest and traditional shops still exist. In this heart of the city the streets that run parallel to Rua Augusta identify the various tradesmen and craftsmen, who have continued to do business there since the time of the Maritime Discoveries. You’ll find jeweler’s stores in the Rua do Ouro (Gold Street) and the Rua da Prata (Silver Street) and cloth and clothes stores in Rua dos Fanqueiros (Drapers’ Street). Check into the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day 3: Depart Lisbon and spend the day in Santarem, one of the oldest cities in the world. You will walk through the narrow streets to the Church of St. Stephen, containing the oldest recorded Eucharistic miracle. This miracle has been on display since 1247 AD. Dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day 4: Full day in Fatima. Start off the day by going to Mass at the Little Chapel of the Apparitions. You will see the Basilica, the site of Francesco and Jacinta's graves, the Hamlet of Aljustrel, where the children lived, and Valinhos, the site of Our Lady's appearance after the children's return from prison. Experience Christ's love as you walk and follow the Stations of the Cross along the Via Sacra (The Sacred Way) culminating in the Chapel of Calvary, which overlooks all of Fatima. Join pilgrims from around the world in an evening candlelight procession to pray the rosary for the sick and drink water from the miraculous well. Time for private devotions before dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day 5: After breakfast depart for Salamanca. Upon arrival our tour begins at the famous Plaza Mayor with its 88 porticoed arches, continue through the Plaza del Corrillo square, and on to the Casa de las Conchas. Then see the Clerecia church, the Monterrey Palace, the Ursulas Convent, and the Colleget of Archbishop Fonseca. Spend some time in the Plaza de Anaya before we see the new Cathedral with its Gothic construction and detailed carvings on the doors (look for the astronaut, a monkey eating ice cream, a stork, and more), and the old Cathedral. Continue on for dinner and overnight in Avila.

Day 6: After breakfast at the hotel we will have a tour of the city. See sites associated with the life of St. Teresa: The Four Posts, Church of San Pedro at the Plaza de Santa Teresa, and the Convento de Santa Teresa. Dinner and overnight in Avila.

Day 7: Today we take a day trip to Segovia. Our first stop is to the Royal Palace and Monastery of El Escorial, then on to the Valle de los Caidos with its famous underground church. This huge monumental memorial was erected by Francisco Franco, the dictator who ruled over Spain from 1939 until 1975, in honor of those who fell during the Spanish civil war (1936-1939). Next, we visit Segovia, a picturesque old city with twisting alleyways, the highest concentration of Romanesque churches in all of Europe and pedestrian-only streets, all bordered by a medieval wall and two rivers. Declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, one of the main tourist attractions is the Alcázar, a royal palace built sometime around the 11th century where Queen Isabel agreed to fund Christopher Columbus’ exploration of the New World. Dinner and overnight in Avila.

Day 8: After breakfast, we will depart towards Zaragoza where we will visit the magnificent Basilica del Pilar, built in the place where our Lady appeared to Saint James. Tradition says that in the early day of the Church, Saint James the Great was spreading the Gospel in Spain, but making very little progress. He was dejected and questioning his mission. About 44 AD, the Virgin Mary, who was still living in Jerusalem at the time, bi-located and appeared to him in a vision to boost his morale. In it, she was atop a column or pillar, which was being carried by angels. That pillar is believed to be the same one venerated inside the Basilica. We will also visit the Cathedral of Zaragoza and we will do a walking tour of the city. Dinner and overnight in Zaragoza.

Day 9: Today we will continue on to Barcelona, first stopping at the Royal Abbey of Poblet, founded in 1151, then having a wine tasting and lunch at Cavas Codorniu. Upon arrival check in to the hotel where you will have some free time to rest and refresh before dinner and overnight in Barcelona.

Day 10: After breakfast, we will enjoy a tour of Barcelona including: a cable car over the Harbor to the top of Montjuic, Plaza de Catalunya, the Picaso Museum, La Boqueria, the Palau Guell and Gaudi's Church of the Sagrada Familia, a beautiful, unfinished Roman Catholic Basilica of impressive proportions. Afterwards, continue on a guided walk through the Gothic Quarter to visit the cathedral and the colorful markets of Las Ramblas. Dinner and overnight in Barcelona.

Day 11: After breakfast, we make our way to Montserrat, home to the dramatically set Benedictine monastery and Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat. Since the 12th-century, pilgrims have been drawn to the mountain to venerate the miraculous statue of the Black Madonna. According to Catholic tradition, the statue of the Black Virgin of Montserrat was carved by St. Luke around 50 AD and brought to Spain. It was later hidden from the Moors in a cave, where it was rediscovered by shepherds in 880 AD. They saw a bright light and heard heavenly music that eventually led them to the grotto and the statue. The Bishop of Manresa, present at the discovery, suggested that it be moved to Manresa, but the small statue was discovered to be so heavy it could not be lifted. Thus the Virgin had indicated her will to stay on Montserrat to be venerated there. In the 11th century, the abbot-bishop Oliba founded a monastery on the mountain of Montserrat next to one of the chapels. The Benedictine Abbey, with its famous choir school, is still there. Then onto the Shrine of Saint Ignatius Loyola at Manresa. Return for dinner and overnight in Barcelona.

Day 12: Our bus takes us to the airport in time for our return flight home.

Please note: We do our best to ensure that all sites listed in this itinerary will be seen. However, due to scheduling conflicts, or other circumstances beyond our control, sites may be visited on a different day than listed. If this happens it will also necessitate a change in the restaurant for dinner. However, we will never sacrifice the quality of the meal, all restaurants will meet Proximo Travel's very high standards.
