Trip Itinerary
GENERAL:
  • Dinners are at 8-8:30pm each evening

  • Early departure (7:30-8am) each day with breakfast available early at hotel unless otherwise noted
Day 1 ~ Fri 12/26: Departure from Dulles International Airport Day 2 ~ Sat 12/27: Early arrival in Milan (12:10pm). Visit the grave of St. Gianna Barretta Mola at the Cemetary of Mesero. Take a short bus ride to Turin to see Frassati, Bosco, Savio and the Shroud of Turin. Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians in Turin. Dinner, Adoration and overnight in Milan. Driving times: Bus from Milan Linate Airport to Cemetary of Mesero (40 min); Cemetary of Mesero to Turin (1 hr 15 mins); Turin to Milan (1 hr 45 mins). Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians in Turin. Dinner in Milan. If there isn't enough time due to airline delays and baggage retrieval, we can skip visiting the grave of St. Gianna Barretta Mola. Day 3 ~ Sun 12/28: (7:30am departure) Early departure after breakfast to visit the Basilica of St. Ambrose (Mass). Visit St. Augustine in Pavia and St. Catherine of Siena. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Driving times: Milan to Pavia (45 mins); Pavia to Siena (4 hrs); Siena to Rome (2 hrs 30 mins). Mass at St. Ambrose. Spend 3 hours in Siena visiting Piazza where the Palio is located, Dominican Church, and the house of St. Catherine. Dinner in Siena. Day 4 ~ Mon 12/29: Early departure after breakfast. Visit the Colosseum, the symbol of the city of Rome; a great building that has been standing since 80 A.D. Visit St. John Lateran, the first Basilica ever to be built in the Roman Empire. In the afternoon, go to the breathtaking Catacombs where 500,000 people were buried. Visit the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Wall where the body of St. Paul is buried. It is the 2nd largest basilica in Rome and the 5th in the world. Visit St. Mary Major, the main Basilica dedicated to Mary in Rome. We will see the remains of Jesus' manger, the tomb of Bernini, the remains of St. Matthew the Evangelist, the tomb of St. Jerome, and the oldest icon in the world of the Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke: the famous Salus Populi Romani. We may immerse ourselves in the local culture by attending an Italian mass at St. Mary Major as well. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Allow flexibility to visit Santa Scala and spend time there. If there is additional time to visit St. John Lateran across the street, that would be fine. Mass at St. Paul outside the Walls, if not available, then mass at St. Mary Major. If possible, to visit St. Lourdes outside the walls as well. Catacombs ~ San Clemente or St. Calista. If possible to visit St. Peter in Chains near the Colosseum in honor of Cardinal Whorl. Group picture at either St. Mary Major or Castel Sant'Angelo. Day 5 ~ Tues 12/30: Begin the day around 7:30am, by visiting St. Peter's in the Vatican, the largest Basilica in the world. There will be time for private devotion and shopping before lunch. In the afternoon, we will see the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel (the Pope's private Chapel). Long pants, capris, or skirts below the knee, shoulders covered. Time to rest before dinner in the area of the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Would like to have mass in one of the chapels below St. Peter's Basilica ~ advised that it may not be possible. They would like to climb up to the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica. They also would like some free time before dinner. Day 6 ~ Wed 12/31: We will have an early start as our private bus leaves around 7:00 am to the Vatican to experience the 10:00 am Audience with the Pope. We will see the Pope very closely; sometimes we even shake his hand. There will be time for lunch in the area of the Vatican before we visit the Spanish Steps. This is the place where the Romans hung out. From there we will walk to Trevi Fountain, and have time for shopping. Followed by a walk to the Pantheon, the oldest functional building in the world, and then to the great artistic place of Piazza Navona around 4:30 pm. Dinner at Piazza Navona. Overnight in Rome. Instead of going to the Spanish Steps, they would like to see 5 churches in the area: St. Ignacio, Jesu, St. Monica, St. Phillip Mary, Santa Maria sopra Minerva which are all near the Piazza Navona. Afternoon mass at either Jesu or St. Ignacio. Would like to attend midnight mass with the Pope. Would like to see the fireworks display in Rome. Day 7 ~ Thurs 1/1: Early departure from Rome (7:30am). Visit Maria Goretti in Nettuno and off to Monte Cassino to visit Benedict and Scolastica, then to Mugnano del Cardinale to see St. Philomena. Take the short drive to Pompeii to visit the Madonna del Rosario Sanctuary and Bl. Bartolo Longo. Dinner and overnight in the area of Pompeii. Driving times: Rome to Nettuno (1 hr); Nettuno to Monte Cassino(2 hrs); Monte Cassino to Mugnano del Cardinale (1 hr 15 mins); Mugnano del Cardinale to Pompeii (35 min). Walk to Maria Goretti's farmhouse and be at Monte Cassino before 12:30pm to have enough time to visit there before they close for the day. They don't need an intense history of Monte Cassino. Mass at St. Philomena as a second choice or mass at the Madonna del Rosario Sanctuary as a first choice. Day 8 ~ Fri 1/2: Begin the day (8:00am) with a short drive to Pagani to visit St. Alphonsus Liguori and then travel to St Andrew in Almalfi, to Duomo di Salerno (St. Matthew), then to St. Gerard Majella in Materdomini, then to San Giovanni Rotondo. Dinner and overnight in San Giovanni Rotondo. Driving times: Pompeii to Pagnani (20 min), Pagnani to Amalfi (1 hr), Amalfi to Salerno (45 min), Salerno to Materdomini (1 hr 30 mins); Materdomini to San Giovanni Rotondo (2 hrs) Mass at St. Andrews. If there is time, do the Amalfi coast. Day 9 ~ Sat 1/3: (7:30am departure) Visit Padre Pio Shrine and Monte San'Angelo (Cave of St. Michael). Drive along the Adriatic Coastline to Lanciano, then to the Manoppello to visit the Holy Face Sanctuary and then to Loreto. Dinner and overnight in Loreto. Driving times: San Giovanni Rotondo to Monte San'Angelo (30 mins); Monte Sant'angelo to Lanciano (2 hrs); Lanciano to Manoppello (1 hr), Manoppello to Loreto (1 hr 45 mins). Mass first choice: Cave of St. Michael Mass 2nd choice: Padre Pio Shrine. Depart Manoppello at 5:30pm to get in Loreto in time for dinner. Day 10 ~ Sun 1/4: (8:00am departure) Begin the day visiting the Holy House in Loreto, travel to Osimo for St. Joseph of Cupertino (patron saint of students) and then onto Assisi to visit St. Mary of the Angels Basilica and spend time in Assisi. Dinner in the area of Assisi and overnight in Perugia. Driving times: Loreto to Osimo (30 min); Osimo to Assisi (2 hrs) Mass at St. Clare's. Day 11 ~ Mon 1/5: (8:00am departure)Visit the Basilica of St. Clare and the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. Dinner in the area of Assisi and overnight in Perugia. Mass at St. Francis of Assisi. Free day after mass to meet as a group for lunch if they wish or to meet for dinner (mandatory). Day 12 ~ Tues 1/6: Return to the US from Rome to Dulles International Airport. Please note: We do our best to ensure that all sites listed in this itinerary will be seen. However, due to scheduling conflicts, or other circumstances beyond our control, sites may be visited on a different day than listed. If this happens it will also necessitate a change in the restaurant for dinner. However, we will never sacrifice the quality of the meal, all restaurants will meet Proximo Travel's very high standards.
